Say, Snap & Spell is a great way to build automatic recall of high frequency words without the pressure of worksheets, long lists or flash cards. The complete Module 1 Kit contains 6 packs of cards, each featuring 10 high frequency words (4 sets of each).
Split the pack between players and take turns placing a card and saying the word. If two cards in a row match, the child must say 'snap' and then repeat the word. Next, the card is placed face down and all players write the word, then check their spelling.
The aim is instant recognition of high frequency words when reading and consolidation of spelling, including any irregular words.
Keep a pack of these durable playing cards on hand for spontaneous practice anywhere and everywhere! Get parents, grandparents, neighbours and friends involved - remember the aim is reading fluency and the more practice the better!
'Sight words' versus 'high frequency words'
High frequency words appear frequently in text. They are often referred to as 'sight words', however ANY word we can read by sight it technically a sight word.
While the focus at school is often on memorising 'sight words', many can be decoded using standard letter-sound links and spelling rules (e.g. am, an, on, in, had etc). No guessing or memorising required!
Say, Snap & Spell packs link directly to the Read3 program to support decoding of high frequency words (regular and irregular) whenever possible. Through a combination of Say, Snap & Spell and U-Know Words, your child will systematically build their bank of sight words.
Visual cue for 'tricky' words
Cards featuring eyes are 'tricky' words – they contain irregular sounds, or do not match sound-letter rules taught so far in the Read3 program. The eyes should prompt your child to think about how else they might say the word.
To assist your child, point out all the regular parts of the word that they CAN decode and then highlight the irregular part. For example 'said' contains 's' and 'd' so the only irregular part is that we spell the 'e' sound using ai.
Simple design
Our simple, uncluttered design has proven particularly useful for children who are easily distracted or have ADHD. There's no 'pretty pictures' or 'flashing lights' to sidetrack them from the end goal, which is decoding and reading words!
Adjust the game to suit each child's needs
As with all Read3 activities, instructions on how to simplify or extend play are included so you can differentiate the game based on the unique needs of the child. As automatic recall improves, you may wish to add spelling and writing into the game.
