Decodable Readers: Overview
In addition to the regular HEAR + SEE + AUTO routine, children need to practice their skills daily using decodable texts.
Sticking as close as possible to the exact code a child is currently working on is very important, particularly in the early stages of learning to read.
One of the challenges when supporting struggling beginner readers is finding enough decodable readers at a suitable level in the early stages to get that much-needed practice. The fact that the scope and sequence of every series varies a little certainly adds to the challenge!
Read3 helps support daily practice with decodables in the following ways:
Read3-aligned Decodable Readers
Sounds-Write and the Phonics Books Pty Ltd collections are the most closely aligned with the early stages of the Read3 Scope & Sequence. Therefore, we recommend you purchase these titles as a starting point for your decodable readers collection. Little Learner's Love Literacy is not quite as closely aligned but text is restricted to CVC words which makes them a good next choice.
Details on specific titles from these series are provided in the "Curated Resources" list at each step (see below).

Curated resources in every step
Make sure you check these! A list of book titles, apps, websites and computer games are included with each step of the program. This may include a number of titles from a Read3-alignted series, a number for a Read3 Curated list, or additional titles we have discovered in our searching. To access each file, scroll to the bottom of any lesson content and click curated resources beside the book icon (pictured below).
FREE Decodable Readers
Under the decodable readers menu you'll find a collection of FREE titles. These are a great place to start as most can be viewed online. Be sure to check our list of curated titles (see below) for guidance on title selection at each step.

Curated list of titles per decodable series
To help you select appropriate readers from publishers that do not align as closely with the Read3 Scope & Sequence, we offer curated lists of all titles within a collection - quite often the most appropriate titles are all over the place! This curation process also helps us identify titles suitable for Module 2 which follows a unique sequence compared to other phonics programs.
