Read3 Guide to Error Correction
Learn how to gently and consistently
support your child as they learn to decode words.
When learning to read errors are going to happen. Rather than getting frustrated, try to encourage your child to view them in a positive light. According to the science of learning, errors are actually great opportunities for learning! 📙📗📘
Children need to associate errors with positive responses from adults and should never feel as though they are being punished. This is particularly important for struggling learners. In addition to the specific verbal response (outlined in the guide), your tone of voice and body language need to support the child - especially those who are aware of their struggles.
The Read3 learning system uses a chunking strategy to support decoding and automatic recall when learning to read. It is important that anyone administering Read3 sessions has a clear understanding of how this approach differs from sound-by-sound decoding which is typically used in the classroom.
This guide provides a framework for error correction, plus nine worked examples, to ensure continuity of instruction in terms of the terminology and responses when correcting errors.
