Chunk Check (Stage 1) as an AUTO activity

Chunk Check (Stage 1) is listed as an AUTO activity for a reason! The activities in each column on the Read3 Practice Guide follow a hierarchy from easiest to hardest.

Before your child launches into reading full words, we need to first make sure they can accurately and comfortably blend two sounds. Otherwise they run the risk of resorting to sound-by-sound decoding.

Chunk Check (Stage 1) helps achieve this, so practise, practise, practise!

In the early stages of a new Step it can take a while to build accurate decoding skills. Therefore Chunk Check (Stage 1) may be both the AUTO and the MONITOR activity for a while, and that's OK!  Repeat Chunk Check as many times as you can throughout the day to build familiarity of patterns (but only score once).

As skills build, your child will start reading full words (U-Know Words) and writing sentences (Word Hive).

They will ALSO be completing Chunk Check as a daily monitoring task. Progress from Stage 1 (Accurate) to Stage 2 (Automatic) and master before moving to the next step. Full details are included on each Chunk Check instruction sheet.
